Senator John McCain is the Republican nominee for President of the United States of America. He has also proven time and time again that he is not qualified or capable of that office. He doesn’t know the basic aspects of the economy, he’s a foreign policy nightmare, and he can’t even use a computer on his own.
In comparison, Senator Obama is charismatic, capable, and overwhelmingly more intelligent than John McCain could ever be. He has solid plans for the economy, great foreign relations already, and a following of college educated supporters.
So why in the world are the polls still close?
Many people are not voting based on debates, the economy, or the war in Iraq. People are voting based on who is smarter or better prepared. People are voting for very different reasons for which they have very strong convictions.
Abortion is a major issue for Republican faithful. People voted for George W. Bush because he is pro-life. While abortion is a very delicate and complicated issue, it isn’t one that is affected by your presidential vote. Since George Bush was elected, there has been no decline in the rate of abortions. Electing a Republican has not helped to decrease the rate of abortions at all.
Gay marriage. President Bush vowed to make marriage between man and a woman the American way, yet multiple states have legalized gay marriage while President Bush has been in office. In fact, more states legalized gay marriage during his Presidency then during the democratic President Clinton’s administration.
These issues are tied closely to tradition. They represent the way things have been done in America, and following a certain line of thinking, are naturally patriotic things to do if you loved America in the past.
Meanwhile, the Republican party has commandeered the title of the “moral” party in the United States, despite policies that favor big business, oil companies, and literally do not care about the middle class. The Republican middle class continues to support the Republican party because they believe that if a democrat is elected, the country will be overrun with gay people aborting babies across the unprotected border all day.
Please do not get me wrong on this. Our country would be so much better if there were never another abortion ever. But there will be abortions, regardless of laws, and making it illegal will only increase the number of dangerous abortions performed with coat hangers.
Gay marriage will most likely be legal in most states within the next 50 years regardless of what we believe is right or wrong, so voting based on things that won’t be changed according to our votes is anti-democratic.
This is a call to the American people to vote according to what is best for America, not along party lines. I’m not advocating voting for a Democratic president in every election; I am saying that you should look at which party will help you in aspects that you are affected by and vote for that. Don’t become a registered party member: you owe the parties no allegiance. You pledged your allegiance to the flag of the United States, not the Republican or Democratic party.
